Building Practical Skills in R for Research

The Sustaining the African Health Initiative Community of Practice Project at the Regional Institute of Population Studies hosted a three‑day hands‑on workshop focused on the open‑source statistical programming language R. This initiative reflects the project’s focus on research capacity building of early career scholars.

The workshop, which was facilitated by Dr. Charles Agyei-Asabere, trained 25 participants in the use of R for basic data processing and analysis.

The workshop introduced participants to the fundamentals of R programming, including the R environment, workflow, and installation and use of packages required for data analysis. Hands-on sessions involved the analysis of Demographic and Health Survey data to produce demographic indicators and descriptive frequencies.

By the end of the workshop, participants were able to confidently navigate R and RStudio, produce descriptive and bivariate analyses, create simple data visualizations, and generate reproducible outputs using scripts.

Participants praised the workshop’s excellent organization and facilitation, noting that it provided a strong foundation for mastering R. Many expressed excitements about building on these skills to achieve greater proficiency in the future. Below are a few quotes from their feedback:

 “Great workshop and organization.”

“I think the organizers and facilitators have done well – we look forward that we build on this skill and become masters of using R.”
