RIPS launches seminal edited volume on Ghana’s Demography

The successful launch of the edited volume Ghana’s Demography: Evolution and Implications for Development marks an important contribution to contemporary scholarship and policy discourse. This landmark publication, produced by the Regional Institute for Population Studies (RIPS) in collaboration with partners, marks the first comprehensive demographic assessment of Ghana’s population dynamics since independence. It chronicles over six decades of demographic change and its intersection with national development, using robust evidence from censuses, surveys, and administrative datasets.

The launch brought together academics, policymakers, researchers, and graduate students for an engaging discussion of the book’s themes and findings in Ghana and beyond. Chaired by Dr. Nii Moi Thompson, Chairperson of the National Development Planning Commission, the event underscored the book’s relevance to diverse stakeholders. In his remarks, Dr. Thompson stated that for policymakers and government agencies, it offers clear, evidence-based recommendations and practical insights for planning across the health, education, social protection, and environmental sectors, ensuring that strategies are responsive to Ghana’s population dynamics.

The Provost of the College of Humanities, Prof. Joseph A. Yaro, also gave remarks which highlighted that the volume is both a scholarly achievement and a strategic resource that advances the University of Ghana’s vision by connecting demographic evidence to development outcomes and offering empirically grounded recommendations to bridge the gap between knowledge and practice. He noted that the book engages policymakers, regional networks, and international partners and should be used to foster dialogue across sub-Saharan Africa and beyond. He also noted that for students and scholars, the book can be used to enrich teaching and research, shape theses, stimulate debate and nurture the next generation of demographers and development experts.

Prof. Stephen O. Kwankye, one of the editors, outlined the book’s rationale and themes, emphasising the importance of population data and demographic analysis for evidence-based planning and stronger integration of population dynamics into policy dialogue. He also highlighted the key investments needed to harness Ghana’s demographic shifts, including youth skills development, healthcare and social security reforms for an aging population, environmental sustainability, and targeted policies to reduce inequality.

Dr. Grace Bediako, who contributed to the book’s foreword, highlighted the collaborative spirit underpinning the volume. She noted that the volume brings together diverse expertise, offering fresh reflections on demographic theories while addressing the complex challenges of today. She commended the contributors for their scholarship that goes beyond theory to directly address pressing policy issues, such as harnessing the demographic dividend and tackling inequalities in key areas.
